Exercise 3: What Makes A Good Blog?

Week 3

Section 011

Jesse Maxwell Perez, Stanley Tsai, Jodie Quach, and myself

A blog is defined as “A Web site on which an individual or group of users record opinions, information, etc. on a regular basis”, and a good blog will abide by these standards.

Our homework for this week was to compare two blogs; one that is useful for research and one that is not.
http://digitalfaun.tumblr.com/, titled Digitalfaun.

http://harrymitchell.tumblr.com/post/61729397534/some-pictures-from-the-past-two-days-in-new-york, titled Harry JR Mitchell.
The Digitalfaun blog is an example of a blog very useful in order to research about photography as it has statements of the pictures, and the history behind them. When analyzing photography, it is important to have background information on it, as it is vital to the critique that the photo will be receiving. This blog also contains overall opinions of the artist, allowing you to see insights into the style of their photography
The Harry JR Mitchell blog is not an example of a bad blog, but a blog that would not necessarily be useful in carrying out research. The context of this blog is only photos taken by the artist, and no information about the artist or descriptions of the photos. Recording research from this blog would be difficult as you have only your views to reflect on.

A blog is most useful when all information is given, so the viewer has a solid idea of the blog inside and out.

I would like to have a simple blog. The look of the blog would not concern myself too much as I will be concerning with the content. A website, perhaps, would have my greater attention for the aesthetics. My blog would have a simple interface which is easy to navigate, allowing users to browse through the content with ease, thus allowing them to read more of the content produced. I like the “Tag Cloud” feature on my blog already, it emphasizes recurring subjects. My blog would not focus on pages so much, more with the categories and archival features that makes a blog so easy to navigate.
